BIO, JESUS POWELL, BOARD MEMBER

 

Jesus Powell is an educator, artist, and Co- Founder of the Black Achievement Fund. He is a Dean of Students and founding staff member of KIPP NYC College Prep in the South Bronx of New York.  

Prior to this position, Mr. Powell served as a paralegal and office manager for Bonjean Law Group and Harrison Trading Group Company’s satellite office in New York. During his time at Bonjean Law Group, Mr. Powell worked to represent defendants in criminal and civil rights abuse cases. He also was personal and office assistant to the founders of both Harrison Trading Group and Bonjean Law Group.

 

Previously, Mr. Powell worked for the Bronx Defenders, one of the premier public defenders offices in the country. During his time at the Bronx Defenders, Mr. Powell helped support five attorneys in representing indigent clients, providing them some of the best representation in the country.

 

Upon leaving college, Mr. Powell helped found a roofing company with his father that employed all people of color and guaranteed all staff an hourly rate 15% higher than any roofing company in the region. After this Mr. Powell became a substitute teacher in his hometown, teaching grades K-12, bilingual classes and special needs classes.

 

Mr. Powell received his B.A. in Government from the University of Virginia, and his M.A. in Educational Leadership from Concordia University. Mr. Powell enjoys traveling, drawing, and reading.
